Blood Banks Gurgaon & Blood Transfusion Services in Gurgaon

As per the Indian Red Cross Society “Against an annual demand of 12 million units, India is able to collect only 9 million units of which 70% is from voluntary blood donors while the remaining 30% is from family/replacement donors.” Blood Banks Gurgaon do a lot of work to ensure that maximum is being done in this area.

Voluntary blood donation is undoubtedly, the highest form of humanitarian service as it is done without expectation of even knowing who it will help. There is a higher altruistic thought that motivates such action. One single blood donation actually helps many patients as blood is usually segregated into RBC’s, Platelets, WBC’s and Plasma and given accordingly for their requirement.

The popular misconception that a person becomes weak by donating blood is wrong. On the contrary, there are several benefits of blood donation. Donating blood improves overall cardiovascular health as blood donated regularly helps males in particular to reduce the amount of iron in the blood which can reduce the chance of heart attacks. Additionally, it can also lower the risk of severe cardiovascular events such as stroke. Blood donation enhances the production of new blood cells as new cells are produced by the marrow within 48 hours of donation, and all of the red blood cells the donor loses during donation are completely replaced within one to two months. Blood donation has also been seen to lower risk of cancer including liver, lung, colon, stomach and throat cancers.

Blood donation has other obvious benefits like receiving a free prior health screening plus mini blood test. Blood is also tested for some major diseases and the donor is immediately informed in strict confidentiality if any of these tests show positive results. A blood donor by his donation saves many lives and gives hope to many whose situation may otherwise be hopeless. Blood donors give such patients a second lease of life. By donating blood one impacts not only the patient whose life may depend on it, but also all those who depend on that patient. The entire community will benefit from the spirit of generosity.

Artemis Medicare Services (P) Ltd., Sector-51, Gurgaon - 122001

Blood Transfusion centre at Artemis is a first centre in South East Asia to adopt universal leucodepletion in routine practice. It is also the first center in India to have individual donor nucleic acid testing (ID-NAT) tested blood from center initiation. This centre is among very few centers to have patient tailored component therapy. The Blood transfusion services are backed by highly trained and dedicated staff to deliver the best clinical practices.

Services Offered

Leucodepletion :– Leucodepletion is a procedure that minimizes white blood cell (WBC) transmission in transfused blood. WBC’s are the most common contaminant in the blood and are known to cause various adverse effects such as:
Febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reactions – one of the most common transfusion associated complications that causes fevers and leads to stopping of the transfusion.
Transmission of viral infections such as Cytomegalovirus (CMV) that causes serious complications in newborns, transplant and immunocompromised patients.
Refractoriness to platelet transfusions. Platelet refractoriness is a major cause of problems in the long-term management of patients that are transfusion dependent such as chemotherapy and oncology patients.
In fact, 3-5 log leucodepletion is a standard clinical practice in developed countries and has been shown to improve patient outcomes and decrease hospital costs.

Individual Donor Nucleic Acid Testing: – Individual donor nucleic acid testing (ID-NAT) that is performed on donated blood dramatically improves the safety of blood transfusion by reducing the chances of transmission of HIV, hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV). Most commonly used screening methods pick up these viruses by looking for antibodies which may develop only many months after acquiring the infection. ID-NAT reduces the window period by looking for viral DNA or RNA even before antibodies are formed. Thus, we can detect these infections at a very early stage, which is not possible with routine screening tests in most of the blood banks.

Blood Component Therapy
One donor can give one unit of whole blood. However, blood has many different living and non living parts that can be separated and stored.
This separation of blood is into what is known as blood components. Artemis Health Institute is among very few centers that performs this.
Only the portion of blood that is required by the patient is administered, thereby minimizing the risks of transfusion and allowing for efficient use of a donated whole blood unit.
Patient tailored blood component therapies are routinely practiced in developed countries taking into consideration the patient safety and compliances with current good clinical practice (cGMP)

Donor Criteria
Criteria for blood donation have also been defined to minimize risks to the donor. These criteria include:
Donor should be in good health. The minimum acceptable patient weight is =45 kg for whole blood donation and =55 kg for aphaeresis donation.
The hemoglobin level should be = 12.5 gm/dl.
Donor age should be between 18 – 60 years.
Donors are screened on basis of guidelines laid down by various bodies such as the Central Drug Controller of India under Drug and Cosmetic Act (DCA, 1940) and American Association of Blood Banks (AABB). Our highly trained staff in the blood bank will assist you throughout the screening and donation process.

Transfusion Medicine Specialists deal with the transfer of blood or blood products from one person (the donor) into another person’s (the recipient’s) bloodstream. Transfusion of your own blood (autologous) is the safest method but requires planning and not all patients are eligible. Directed donor blood allows the patient to receive blood from known donors. Volunteer donor blood is the safest.

The endeavour of the department is to supply safest possible blood components. The safety begins with diligent check of donor’s medical history and physical examination. The tests for HIV 1 & 2, Hepatitis B & C, Malaria and Syphilis are done using best of technology and methods. There is an additional layer of safety in testing called Nuclear Amplification Technology (NAT). There are few blood centres in the country which use this testing technology. There are advance technologies like Universal Leucodepletion, Irregular Antibody Screen, etc to reduce the chances of adverse reactions to the patient.

We perform therapeutic apheresis procedures in patients suffering from certain neurological disorders like Myasthenia gravis, G B Syndrome, etc. The department is also part of stem cell harvest, their cryopreservation and infusion as part of the stem cell therapy for variety of disorders.
