Hachi Ba – Tibetan & Chinese Restaurant Gurgaon Review

Notice: Change of Location – Hachi Ba Tibetan & Chinese Restaurant has moved. The new address is – Plot 26, Saraswati Kunj, Sector 54, Gurgaon, Haryana 122002. Contact numbers remain the same.

Hachi Ba – Tibetan & Chinese Restaurant is clocking almost three years and has been a personal favorite for a while now. Interestingly, the restaurant’s name “Hachi Ba” translates to number 88 (Hachi means 8 in Japanese while Ba means 8 in Pinyin) both equating prosperity and wealth. The interiors are spartan but pleasantly soothing, quite like simple Tibetan restaurants in Leh. The restaurant is air-conditioned, has sturdy walnut finish furniture and the walls are decked up with large Thangka paintings. Hachi Ba also has an outdoor seating of benches and tables which is fabulous during the winters and otherwise pleasant days.

The place is run by Kalsang Kelly who promises & delivers an authentic Tibetan and Chinese experience. Trained by no one else but his father in the trade, this ex-model & film production coordinator turned restaurateur is at the helm of affairs daily. From buying vegetables and meats, to taking orders and getting them to the table in time, to sharing anecdotes with his customers, Kelly is omnipresent. His kitchen team is competent which is evident from the number of regulars and repeat customers he gets.

The food borders around spectacular but slip ups do happen at times. When the ball slips Kelly accepts the feedback graciously and tries to better it. Here is a run down on the “Must Haves” on the Hachi Ba menu.

The carnivores should start with Momos – Chicken/ Pork (Rs. 220) which are absolutely juicy and are served with their home made green chilly sauce; Drums of Heaven served with Garlic sauce (Rs.299); & Drunken (Pork) Spare Ribs (Rs.350) which makes you sway in delight like the Drunken Master (remember the Jackie Chan classic); and last but not the least Chicken in Butter Garlic Sauce (Rs.330) which can also be had as a main course. There is a superb selection of vegetarian starters too. Recommended are Garlic & Cheese Mini Rolls (Rs.199) which are not on the menu but well you can always request; Honey Chilly Potatoes (Rs.199); and Seasonal Vegetables Salt & Pepper (Rs.199). For weight watchers Hachi Ba offers Crispy Corn Salt & Pepper (Rs.199).

If you thrive on soups try the Steam Boat (Rs.499) which is enough for four people. Unfortunately, Hachi Ba has just one of these “boats” so be quick to order. Hachi Ba Special Mixed soup (Rs.150) is yet another must try. They also offer an array of vegetarian and non vegetarian Tibetan broths called “Thukpa” if that’s where your calling is.

Main course at Hachi Ba is an ensemble of Chinese & Tibetan cuisine. Their home made noddles are fabulous especially the Mixed Meat Noodles (Rs.220). Pair it with Chicken Hong Kong (Rs.299) and a portion of Roast Pork Chilly Dry (Rs.299) and you are home safe. From the Tibetan cuisine two dishes are not to be missed – the Chicken Shapta (Rs.299) and Lowa (Rs.250). Both of these are served with Tibetan bread called Ting Mo (Rs.55).

A meal is never over unless something sweet is tucked in. Try the Hachi Ba signature Chocolate Momos with Ice Cream (Rs.130) or Sesame Crispy Flat Honey Noodles (Rs.75) both of which are outstanding.

The menu that Hachi Ba offers is rather huge so one does tend to get lost in it. It’s always a better idea to ask Kelly or one of his boys for a recommendation unless you wish to go with my recommendations.
