Naivedyam Gurgaon Review
My love for South Indian food makes me eat at road side dhabas and restaurants alike. The crispy dosas, soft idlis and sambhar can make me drool at all times. I visited Naivedyam in Sushant Lok, Gurgaon for the first time today after hearing raving reviews about it. Since we were early, the South Indian restaurant looked empty but came across as big, clean and unostentatious. We were greeted & seated by a pleasant looking Northeastern steward wearing Rajinikanth style lungi & shirt.
The menu books at Naivedyam (can’t call them cards) came in pronto, water was served equally fast and the chutneys – Poof! They just appeared out of nowhere. The next thing to delight us was a complementary glass of butter milk for all of us – great stuff. I was a bit puzzled a bit by finding the chutneys a tad thinner and enquired. The order taker explained that they were fresh and made just about then so were not refrigerated at all. The taste of the three chutneys was overall very good.
Our food order at Naivedyam consisted of Rava Masala Dosai (Rs.90), Mysore Rava Masala Dosai (Rs.100), Onion Oothappam (Rs.90), Papad (Rs.10 for two pieces) and Thayir Vadai or Dahi Vada (Rs.85 for two vadas).
The papad and thayir vadai came within no time of ordering – superb. The papad were fresh & crisp but the dahi badas at Naivedyam disappointed. The taste of dahi and the boondi garnish went well but the vadas were soggy. Leaving a bit of bite there may have been a better idea. Considering we were famished the Thayir Vadai vanished in no time.
The second round came in just as we polished off the first. I can just keep raving about the service at Naivedyam – the lungi-shirt clad boys do an outstanding job here. They are available instantly and are quite efficient. As the mains arrived hot from the gridle, Naivedyam’s Dosais & Oothappam amazed me totally. These were huge when compared to ones I have eaten elsewhere in a restaurant or roadside – a definitive more for your buck.
Naivedyam Dosais were at their crispy best, tasted perfect and left us happy and full. The Mysore masala imparted the right kind of zing to the Rava Dosai. The Oothappam was done just right and was spongy as expected. It gave us a struggle and more than half of it had to be packed. The sambhar was tangy and spicy albeit a little short on vegetables. The better part, without asking for more the staff was considerate enough to place an extra boat of sambhar on our table, just in case.
The doggy bag came well in time followed with the bill. Naivedyam’s credit card machine was out of order which can get tricky in case you are short on cash. The good part – they honoured a discount of 20% on Citibank card as advertised outside the restaurant and collected the payment in cash.
Naivedyam’s high points, especially the taste and pocket friendliness totally add up to an experience that will take me back for more. I believe their Tiffin Thali and Tangam Paper Dosai are fabulous so I already know what my next order is. And if you are one of those who love South Indian food, head out to Naivedyam over the weekend.
