A Lot of Malabar in Gurgaon

Malabar Spl Chicken Biryani @ Malabar Hotel

Malabar Hotel, 1305, Sector 39, Opposite Medanta Medicity, Jharsa, Gurgaon

My frequent visits to Keraliyaam restaurant in Green Park abruptly stopped by its sudden closure a few years back. Keraliyaam was one of the finest places to get great Keralite food in Delhi. I had been craving for some good Kerala, Malabari food when someone suggested Malabar Hotel in Sector 39, Gurgaon.

Malabar is not too difficult to find. It is in the village market right opposite Medanta Medicity, Gurgaon. The area is densely populated by cooperative societies and corporates. The location becomes advantageous for Malabar Hotel. Once you turn in you can’t miss the loud red board with equally red if not redder wall paint on the facade. Interestingly, there is more to Malabar Hotel – Malabar Jewellers and Malabar Tours and Travels. All three form a group. They also have a unit in Sarai Julena in New Friends Colony, New Delhi.

As I entered Malabar Hotel, I was a bit amazed to find it almost half full. This was around 2:30 PM in the afternoon. Tables in this 32 cover restaurant were turning quickly and it was full in no time. Malabar Hotel seemed a popular place to eat with people – a lot of them wearing office badges. The servers were welcoming and smiling which was warming. Water was served immediately with the menu. Food order was taken pronto. Queries were answered with the right information.

Between two of us, we ordered Aleppy Chicken Curry (Rs.140), Chicken Chettinad (Rs.140), Appam (Rs.8) and Malabar Spl Chicken Biryani (Rs.130). I was impressed. I must admit the portions for the prices were huge. What was disappointing was that not even a single dish with Fish, Prawn and Mutton were available. “No Sapply” was the answer when I inquired.

The Malabar Spl Chicken Biryani was really well done. Really fragrant and full of chicken pre cooked in masalas. The biryani was served with a small papad, raita and Kerala lemon pickle. The chicken dishes seemed to have roasted chicken added to the spicy gravies. While the chicken was dry and failed to impress me, both gravies were outstanding and so were the appams. The food quantity was quite a bit hence lots of it got parcelled for home.

What I did find funny was the fact that the bill was presented even before we completed our meal by the overzealous server.

Malabar Hotel is a great place to have affordable food. However, if you are looking for finer nuances to be perfect; you’ll have to seek them somewhere else. As per me, I’ll be heading back for some mutton and seafood for sure.
