Bhindi ka Salan Recipe

by Jiya Jesh · Updated on Curries/ Gravies

Bhindi ka salan recipe – a flavorful curry using okras in a peanut and sesame seeds based gravy. This tangy okra curry can be served with chapathis / rotis or steamed rice.

This bhindi salan is from Hyderabadi cuisine. Bhindi is basically okra or lady’s finger while salan means gravy.

Usually I make a simple bhindi aloo sabzi for lunch or dinner as okras cook fast and taste great even with a minimum of spices.

Occasionally, I make this gravy that is absolutely flavorful that you will go for second helpings.

The flavor comes from peanuts, sesame seeds and coconut, which give a nutty taste to the gravy as well as thickens it.

The tangy flavor comes from tamarind that needs to be soaked and then the tamarind extract needs to be added.

Onions, ginger and garlic too are included, which add to the flavor of the curry.

This recipe is easy to make. We need to first dry roast some of the ingredients and then blend them. Once this preparation is done, the curry is a breeze to make. The bhindi is shallow-fried in oil and then added to the simmering gravy to absorb all the flavors of the curry. That’s it! Okra salan is ready.

Okras are a great source of vitamin C as well as a good source of dietary fiber. Sesame seeds are a good source of calcium and dietary fiber. Peanuts are a rich source of proteins as well as a good source of iron and dietary fiber.

Lets move on to the recipe for easy bhindi ka salan.

How to make Bhindi ka Salan step by step

  1. Firstly, wash the okras and dry them using a towel or just air-dry them till use. Meanwhile, dry roast peanuts in a pan, on medium heat till they turn golden and transfer to a bowl.
  2. In the same pan, dry roast the sesame seeds and once they start to pop, remove from heat. Transfer the toasted sesame seeds to the same bowl.
  3. Then dry roast the cumin seeds till they turn aromatic and change color slightly.
  4. Now dry roast the coconut till it becomes brown in color.
  5. Soak the tamarind in 1/2 cup warm water for 15 mins. Then extract the tamarind juice, discarding the pulp.
  6. Heat 2 tsp oil in a pan and add sliced onions, chopped ginger and chopped garlic.
  7. Fry till the onions turn golden brown. Remove from heat and let it cool down.
  8. Remove the skins of the peanuts. First, blend the roasted and cooled peanuts, sesame seeds, coconut and cumin seeds to a powdery consistency.
  9. Then add the onion-garlic-ginger mixture and blend with around 4 tbsp water to a fine paste.
  10. Make a slit lengthwise on each okra, keeping the ends intact. Heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan and add the okras.
  11. Fry till they turn golden brown in color. Remove the okras and set aside.
  12. In the same pan, add the ground paste.
  13. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder and salt.
  14. Add the tamarind juice to the gravy. Also add 1 cup water and bring the gravy to a boil. Then add the fried bhindis.
  15. Let it simmer on low heat for around 10-12 minutes. The okras will absorb all the flavors of the spices. Once the gravy thickens to desired consistency, remove from heat. Bhindi ka salan is now ready to be served.

Remove the fried okras and set aside.
  12. In the same pan, which has the leftover oil after frying the okras, add the ground paste.
  13. Also add turmeric powder, red chilli powder and coriander powder along with salt.
  14. Add the tamarind juice to the gravy. Also add 1 cup water. Bring the gravy to a boil. Then add the fried bhindis.

Under the new guidelines, which will be in effect till July 31, all shops outside the 104 containment zones will be allowed to open, deputy commissioner Amit Khatri said, adding that social distancing and other safety norms will need to be followed. The guidelines also state there will be no restrictions on inter-state and intra-state movement of persons and goods, and no movement passes will be required for the purpose. Restrictions in containment zones will continue as they currently are till July 31. In these areas, movement will be allowed for only essential and emergency services. A separate, and more stringent, set of curbs applies to the ‘large outbreak regions’ — areas with more than 15 cases — that will remain in force till July 14. While schools, colleges and other educational institutions will remain closed till July 31, training institutions run by the state and central governments outside containment zones will reopen from July 15. Several activities will continue to remain prohibited. Among these are international air travel except as permitted by the MHA and metro services. Cinemas, gymnasiums, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars, auditorium and assembly halls will remain closed and no social, political, cultural, sports, entertainment, academic and religious gathering is allowed. Elderly people above the age of 65 years, children below the age of 10 years, people with comorbidities and pregnant women have been advised to stay at home despite relaxations in restrictions. The MCG said it has constituted teams to check that all shops following protocol. “We have formed six enforcement teams that are ensuring thermal scanning is taking place, social distancing norms are being followed and there are signages for queues and marked spots, and that staff and customers are wearing face masks,” said Hariom Attri, joint commissioner III, MCG.

By Times of India – Punjab and Haryana high court vacates stay on Sector 56 plots, owners can now build houses GURUGRAM: In a relief to over 100 owners who had purchased plots from the Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikarn (HSVP) in Sector 56 over a decade ago, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has vacated the stay on the land after a year. They can now build houses on their plots. “The high court has passed the order in favour of HSVP. It comes as a relief to many owners, who can now proceed with construction after getting the requisite approval from the department,” said HSVP estate officer-2 Vivek Kalia. HSVP, earlier known as HUDA, acquired land in 2003 and launched Sector 56, the last sector it developed in the city. Around 113 people were allotted plots of sizes ranging from 10 marla to 1 kanal in 2005. As many as 25 plot holders got building plans approved for construct of houses, four of which completed construction. In 2018, a landowner whose land was acquired for the development of the sector filed a petition before the high court demanding fair compensation. In July last year, the high court directed that status quo be maintained, following which HSVP stopped approving building plans and occupation certificates in the sector. A few plot owners filed a petition challenging this order. In an affidavit, HSVP claimed that third-party rights have been created in favour of several parties based on which houses were built on the plot. In some cases, buildings were ready and occupancy certificates were withheld only because of the status quo order, it said. A bench of justices SN Satyanarayana and Archana Puri in an order on Wednesday observed that in view of the facts, the order issued earlier can’t be continued to the detriment of several plot holders, and vacated the stay.

By Times of India – Gurugram: Man arrested for killing minor boy in revenge Picture for representational purpose only.GURUGRAM: A 37-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing a 6-year-old boy in the basement of an under construction house in Sushant Lok on Thursday. According to police, the accused had committed the crime to take revenge from the minor’s father over a fight. “The accused, identified as Maniram, called police to report about the murder and fled from the spot. However, he was arrested later,” a police officer said. Maniram, a native of Madhya Pradesh, works at an under construction house in Sushant Lok and lives at the same place. “On Wednesday, Maniram along with Mukesh, the boy’s father who works as a security guard at a guest house in the same locality, were consuming alcohol. They had some argument followed by a scuffle after which Maniram threatened to take revenge. Mukesh went back to the guest house, where he lives with his wife and two children,” the officer added. On Thursday around 10.30am, Maniram took Mukesh’s 6-year-old son, Sahil, to the basement of the under construction house and slit his throat with a kitchen knife. On the basis of the complaint of Sahil’s mother, Sunita, a case has been registered under Section 302 (murder) of IPC at Sushant Lok police station. The accused was arrested within a few hours. “During the investigation, Maniram confessed that he had killed the child after a fight with the father,” said police spokesperson Subhash Boken. In another case, a youth was allegedly stoned to death in Patuadi over personal enmity. The dead body was found on Thursday morning in a field. The deceased was identified as Krishan (34), a resident of Pataudi. A case was registered under Section 302 (murder) of IPC at Pataudi police station. “We suspect that Krishan was killed over personal enmity. An investigation is underway,” a police police officer said.
