Over 200m doses of Covaxin set to expire

Millions of doses of Covaxin are set to expire early next year and may have to be dumped amid poor demand for Covid-19 vaccination in the country, a person in the know told ET.

Bharat Biotech, maker of Covaxin, is staring at huge losses as more than 200 million doses of its vaccine in bulk form and 50 million doses in vials will expire in early 2023, the person said.

The company had stopped the production earlier this year, the same person said.

Covaxin is one of the main Covid-19 vaccines used in the country along with Covishield of Serum Institute of India (SII).

Vaccine demand has fallen with most people in the country fully vaccinated and many avoiding booster dose as fresh infections remain low. According to the data by the government, more than 98% of adult population in the country have received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine and 92% are fully vaccinated.

As reported by ET earlier, even the government has decided not to procure any more Covid-19 vaccines. A government official told ET that stocks were lying with states and hence there was no need to procure more. The country’s first mRNA vaccine, which got approval from the Drug Controller General of India, could never see the light of the day as the government did not procure it and private demand for vaccines has fallen.

“Private hospitals are seeing a drastic drop in vaccination in the last few months, probably due to the general feeling that the risk of getting severely ill has passed and hence the hospitals are not taking the pain to procure it,” said a doctor who requested not to be named. Adar Poonawalla, chief executive of SII, recently said at an event that the company had to dump 100 million doses of Covishield due to a slump in demand. He said SII halted the production of Covishield vaccine in December 2021.

According to Poonawalla, vaccine lethargy has set in and thus, there is a low demand for booster shots.
