Anganwadi workers’ protest: Midday meal workers vow support

GURUGRAM: Midday meal workers have come out in support of the anganwadi workers, who have decided to roll out fresh protests against the state government to press for their long-pending demands.
Midday meal workers met the non-teaching staff of government schools and anganwadi workers on Sunday, where union leaders promised to launch a widespread protest. A statewide convention has been scheduled on July 16 in Rohtak, where delegations of workers from each district will assemble and chalk out plans for their future course of action.
Disgruntled over unmet demands, anganwadi workers held a statewide meeting on Saturday. They plan to launch another phase of a statewide protest for better compensation, social security benefits, proper working hours, and promised bonuses.
The midday meal workers, on their part, are urging the government to appoint sweepers and cleaners in the schools, extend midday meal service to senior classes and restore government school buildings. “The government says it is serious about upgrading the status of public education and improving the performances of schools. However, they have done little to nothing for the welfare of the workers and there are structural flaws such as lack of non-teaching staff like sweepers and cleaners, salaries are not paid to the workers, and ensuring equal work, equal pay model, among other things. We have decided to go on strike,” said Murti Devi, district head of the Haryana midday meal workers union.
