Fix defunct rain harvesting structures within a week, new sectors told

Gurgaon: A joint team of officials from DTCP, the Municipal Corporation of Manesar and the district administration on Thursday inspected rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems installed at housing societies in the new sectors along the Dwarka Expressway.
The societies which have partial or ill-maintained RWH structures have been given time to fix the problem within a week.
The enforcement drive, in fact, started last week on the directions of Gurgaon’s deputy commissioner to ensure strict compliance of rainwater harvesting structures in the housing societies to promote water conservation in the city.
While the RWH system has been made mandatory for residential complexes, its compliance is poor despite the city witnessing a depletion in the groundwater level with each passing year.
On Thursday, a joint team led by the DTP (enforcement) RS Batth visited Sare Homes, Raheja Navodaya, Ansal Heights and Spaze Privy housing societies to check the condition of the RWH systems in the housing societies. During the inspection, the team suggested some modifications and improvements in the existing RWH systems of Sare Homes and Raheja Navodaya.
Batth said, “We have been conducting inspections across the city since last week to check the functionality of RWH structures. There are around 13 RWH pits in Sare Homes and most of them were not cleaned. I have directed the RWA to clean them up within a week and cover the same. The issues with the RWH system in Navodaya was reviewed by the technical team. We will inspect 25 projects across the city next week.”
Hariom Vishwakarma, RWA president of Sare Homes, said that all the observations made during the visit will be complied with. “Our RWA was formed in April this year. Due to a number of Covid cases in the society post-April, we got less time for maintenance of the RWH pits. We have been told to clean the pits, which will be done within two or three days.”
