Gurugram: Hurdles in supply chain hold up work on footbridge at Huda City Centre junction

Gurgaon: Around eight months after a flyover and underpass at Huda City Centre was inaugurated, commuters are still waiting for the launch of a foot overbridge (FOB) at the junction, which is also part of the revamp project.
Although GMDA had plans to construct two FOBs — one on the road towards IFFCO Chowk and the other on the stretch towards NH-8 —the former was scrapped in the initial stage itself after it was found that a few electricity lines were falling in its alignment. The second footbridge too, however, is yet to be installed.According to GMDA officials, the delay in the project is being caused by problems in the supply chain of products being imported from China.
Speaking to TOI, a senior GMDA official said, “We have already built the FOB’s superstructure, but the lift and escalator are yet to be installed. The equipment for both of these come from China, but due to some problems in the supply chain, those have not arrived yet.”
Asked about a timeline for the arrival of the required equipment and completion of the project, officials said that can’t be decided as of now.“The ball is not in our court anymore. We have done what we could from here, but now work can only be completed once the products arrive from China. We cannot say when that will happen,” said the official.
The Rs 43-crore project to revamp the Huda City Centre junction involved, besides the FOB, construction of a unidirectional underpass from Signature Towers towards Subhash Chowk, and a bidirectional flyover between Hussain Marg and the sector road.
Although work on the project had commenced in July 2019 with an initial deadline of 12 months, it was repeatedly delayed due to complications in shifting utilities, the pandemic and bans on construction to curb high pollution levels in NCR.
Before opening the underpass and flyover, senior GMDA officials had told TOI that the plan to construct an FOB on the road towards IFFCO Chowk had been scrapped. The second FOB, they had claimed, would be completed by September 30.
However, work on this too was complicated in the initial stages itself. When GMDA workers started digging for the facility’s foundation, they found several utilities in its alignment. The foundation, they said, had to then be redesigned. Now, with the work still awaiting completion, what commuters see in the area is the FOB’s superstructure standing above the stretch while pedestrians cross the surface road beneath it, risking their lives.
Commuters said this is not the first time GMDA has failed to fulfill its promises. “Even if this supply chain issue is genuine, the authority needs to realise that work on the FOB has already been delayed by many years, and this issue has only cropped up now. This is a trend with the GMDA that they themselves need to break. Commuters cannot be waiting for basic facilities for years on end, they need to get their act together,” said Navneet Dhongra, a resident of sector 43.
