haryana jails start constructing rainwater tanks for prisoners

ROHTAK: To get rid of polluted groundwater, the Rohtak‘s Sunaria jail would soon have five mega water storage tanks which would store rainwater to be used for prisoners’ usage throughout the year.
Each water storage tank would have a capacity to store 1.25 lakh liters of rainwater.
The entire cost of the rainwater storage tank would be borne by the irrigation department and the district jail would not have to shell out any amount from their pocket for the rainwater harvesting project.
Rohtak jail superintendent Suneel Sangwan said that he had been using rainwater from a water storage tank constructed at his own cost for personal consumption for the last one year and had mooted the project for the district jail after its success. The stored water samples were also tested in the laboratory and found matching the safety and purity standards.
Sangwan said that the rainwater collected from the jail buildings would be stored first in a manner that it would go to a water storage tank after it get cleaned for the final storage to be used for drinking consumption.
Lauding the initiative taken by the Rohtak’s Sunaria jail, DGP (Prisons) Muhammad Akil has ordered to construct similar rainwater storage tanks in all the state prisons in all the districts whose cost would be borne by the state agriculture department. According to the DGP letter, to address water scarcity, it is important to undertake efforts for conservation, restoration, re-charge and re-use of water. Taking the ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’ initiative by the central government, the district jail is requested to coordinate with irrigation and water resource authorities to establish rain water harvesting systems in respective jail.
Notably, the situation of groundwater in the state has already posed serious health risks due to presence of fluoride and Arsenic especially on kidney and skin related disorders.
