Nuh: A capacity crowd gathered at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s election rally to listen to his speech, keeping an intent to hear out for any plans he might share for Nuh.
One of India’s most backward districts, though it’s right next to Gurgaon, the common lament around Nuh is the lack of development over decades, and across regimes that have governed the state. This time, they hope, it will change.
“We have been left behind,” said Amina, who was attending the rally in Nuh town from Khalilpur.
Amina said girls from the area have few options for education. “We need a university here, so our girls don’t have to travel far for their studies,” she said.
Her hope that Gandhi would advocate for better education facilities was shared by many others.
Rubina, who is a mother of three girls from Nuh village, said she wanted better opportunities for her children.
“There are no colleges for girls nearby and sending them far away is neither safe nor affordable for us,” she said, adding: “We are hoping this visit will bring the change we have been waiting for.”
Nuh – in news early last year for police raids on cybercriminals and months later for communal riots that erupted during a religious procession months later — has been ranked by govt think-tank Niti Aayog among India’s most “aspirational”, or backward, districts.
Not just education, healthcare, public infrastructure and employment are other areas of concern.
“There are no jobs for us here. We have no choice but to leave our village to find work. If Rahul Gandhi can bring development and create opportunities in Nuh, it would change our lives,” said Imran, a youngster from Anaj Mandi in Nuh town, said.
At the rally on Thursday, Gandhi attacked BJP on Haryana’s high unemployment rate and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s govt favoured only billionaires while neglecting the farmers.
“Modi ji runs a government of ‘arabpatis’. He waived Rs 16 lakh crore of debt of 20-25 people. How many loans of farmers have they waived in Haryana,” the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha said.
Referring to people from the state who went to the US in search for better lives, Gandhi said: “They told me they had to leave Haryana and come all the way to America because there were no jobs back at home… Modi ji must answer how Haryana has reached this shameful position. Why are the youth of this state being forced to leave their homes and families to find jobs elsewhere.” Listening in at the rally, Khalid, a farmer, told TOI: “We need to be heard.”
Farming is our only livelihood. “But we get no support. Gandhi’s visit gives us hope that someone will finally take our concerns seriously,” Khalid said.
