Gurgaon: A youth was booked after an appeal to vote for an independent candidate from Gohana, written on the letterhead of Congress, started doing the rounds on social media before the state went to polls on Saturday.
The appeal, published under the letterhead of Congress MP Satpal Brahmachari, stated that voters should support Independent candidate Rajbir Singh Dahiya in the polls as he would support former CM Bhupendra Singh Hooda after winning the election.
The letter caused much commotion, forcing party functionaries, including Congress candidate Jagbir Malik, to provide a clarification over the matter. An FIR was filed by a staff member of Brahmachari’s office, Mohit Sharma.
On Oct 5, the MP’s personal assistant, Kapil, noticed that someone had forged Satpal Brahmachari’s signature on his letterhead and was flashing it on a Facebook channel, Sharma said, adding that the operator of the social media channel had been identified.
“The youth has disseminated fake news on his social media channel, claiming it to be trustworthy news,” Sharma’s complaint read.
“The police are investigating the matter and have lodged an FIR against the accused under sections 175, 196(1), 318(4) and 353(2) of the BNS,” said Vinod Kumar, ASI, Gohana police station.
