Gurgaon: A 50-year-old farmer from Punjab on way to the Tikri border to mark the first anniversary of the agitation died after being hit by a truck on Gohana-Rohtak road on Wednesday night. A 75-year-old farmer travelling with him sustained serious injuries. The deceased has been identified as Baljit Singh while the other victim, Balwant Singh, is recuperating in hospital.
Bhupinder Singh, an eyewitness who was also on way to the Tikri border, told TOI that two trolleys carrying 24 farmers associated with BKU (Sidhupur) and BKU (Dakonda) had left from Punjab’s Barnala around 10.30am on Wednesday to take part in the one-year anniversary of the farm agitation. Around 8.40pm, the trolleys halted at a dhaba on Gohana-Rohtak road, where several farmers got off to drink tea.
“While a few went inside the dhaba to get tea, some of the others, including Baljit and Balwant, were standing outside next to the trolley. Suddenly, a truck came speeding towards them and ran over them,” said Bhupinder.
Baljit died on the spot. Police said the 32-year-old truck driver, who is from Sampla in Rohtak, tried to escape. “He was caught from the nearby toll plaza and immediately taken into custody. He is out on bail now,” Barauda police station SHO Ravinder Kumar said.
Kumar added that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and has been booked under IPC sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence).
Baljit’s last rites took place in his native village of Dhilwan in Barnala on Thursday evening. Several farmers blocked the road in protest for three hours and demanded a fair probe into the matter.
Bhupinder said Baljit owned three acres of land in his village and is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.
“He was a frequent visitor to the farmers’ protest and was very excited to celebrate its one-year anniversary after the PM announced the laws would be repealed. The incident is highly unfortunate,” he added.
