AMBALA: The residents of Ambala belonging to all the communities held a ‘Ros March’ (protest march) under the banner of Sarv Samaj on Monday, against BJP Ambala City MLA Aseem Goel’s oath of making India a Hindu rashtra (nation).
The protestors handed over a reminder of the complaint to the superintendent of police (SP) Ambala, and sought clarification from him over the delay in taking action on the first complaint against MLA Aseem on the issue filed by Ambala residents jointly on May 4.
About a thousand Ambala residents gathered at historical Gurdwara Manji Sahib in the city, where they held a gathering and offered prayer before starting a march on foot to the office of Ambala superintendent of police (SP). The protestors marched through different markets of Ambala city and reached the SP office in police lines.
The protestors raised slogans of unity among all the religions in India including “Hindu Muslim Sikh Isai (Christian) apas mei hai bhai bahi”, “Our unity is our strength and diversity our power”, “no one is above the law”. They also raised slogans against BJP MLA Aseem Goel.
Heavy police force was deputed by the district administration and cops were moving ahead and behind the protestors.
Meanwhile, the police force was also deputed outside the residence of MLA Aseem as a safety measure.
At about 12 noon, the protestors reached SP office, where they met SP Jashandeep Singh Randhawa and submitted him a memorandum of demand, demanding registration of a case against MLA Aseem Goel for spreading communalism.
SGPC member Harpal Singh Machhonda said, “MLA represents the entire city and in such a case, his act of taking an oath to making India a Hindu rashtra by giving or taking the sacrifice, is against the law. This has hurt the sentiments of the people. If action is not taken against the MLA within seven days then his social boycott will be done and protest will be intensified against the government. People from all the religions”
SP Ambala Jashandeep Singh Randhawa said, “Some organisations held Ros March against the statement of MLA Aseem Goel and we had made all the security arrangements. A complaint was filed by them (residents on May 4), has been sent for the legal opinion and further action will be taken as per the opinion.”
MLA Aseem courted controversy recently after he was caught on video allegedly taking an oath “to make India a Hindu rashtra (nation).” This pledge was administered on May 1 by a news TV channel editor at Samajik Chetna Sangathan’s seminar on the ‘Uniform Civil Code’ at Aggarwal Bhawan in Ambala city.
Speaking to the media on Monday, MLA Aseem Goel tried to clarify his statement on making Hindu rashtra by saying, “I had said that every country has its own rites and culture. In the world, there are Islamic rashtra (nation), and their rites and culture are inspired by Islam, that is why they are called Islamic rashtra but a Hindu can also live there and angrez (British) also live there even after taking permanent residency. Similarly, people of all faiths and religions live in Catholic nations. So I said that 100 crore Hindus have one nation in the entire world and our feeling, philosophy, and soul, rites, and culture of our country are inspired by Hindutva and the name of our country is Hindustan, then what is the problem in making it a Hindu rashtra. We did not speak against any Panth, religion, or their religious practices but I have only said that Bharat should become Hindu rashtra as its soul, rites and culture is Hindu.”
