Gurgaon: A student from Sikkim was allegedly thrashed after being subjected to racial remarks at a grocery store in Sector 56 on May 29. Sudarshan Rahul Gurung (25), who is from West Sikkim, has been pursuing a photography course in Gurgaon.
Around 9.30pm on May 29, Sudarshan had visited the neighbourhood grocery store looking for a can of cold coffee. He opened the refrigerator, checked the price and put the can back since he felt it was too costly.
The store owner, Sudarshan alleged, started speaking rudely when he declined to buy the coffee. Told to behave properly, the owner allegedly hurled abuses at the student and even slapped him in the face. A group of men joined the owner and allegedly attacked Sudarshan. One of them made a video as he was being thrashed.
Sudarshan kept pleading to let him go, but his attackers rained blows on him, the 25-year-old told police. The student, who had to be hospitalised for his injuries, approached the police only on June 11.
“Three men pinned him to the ground, punched and kicked him. All the while, they hurled racial slurs at him. It is very unfortunate that a young man who came to the city to study is being subjected to racial remarks. Why? Is it because we look different from them? We, too, are Indians. We should not pass such remarks on tourists as well,” said Sudarshan’s father PM Gurung, who came to Gurgaon after being informed about the attack on his son.
Himself a cop in Sikkim, Gurung said Sudarshan had suffered injuries to the hands and knees. “My son came here to study, not to file police complaints like this. It’s very disappointing that such a thing happened to him,” he added.
An FIR was filed against the store owner and the others at Sector 56 police station under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC.
The police, however, said both sides attacked each other and one of the store owner’s friends suffered injuries in the face. “We are investigating the case from all angles. One of the men suffered injuries in the face. We have to ascertain the sequence of events first,” said a senior officer.
