GURGAON: A woman wading through a flooded road was electrocuted after she slipped and hit her head against the iron shutter of an ATM kiosk in Faridabad’s Sanjay Colony on Friday.
Sulochana – in her late 50s – was out for some work when it started to rain all of a sudden. As she hurried home through the waterlogged road, she slipped and fell. Her head hit the shutter and she collapsed. The shutter, too, came crashing down on her.
The Hitachi ATM operates from a grocery store, whose owner is responsible for the maintenance of the machine, kiosk and its security. Police said Sulochona could have tried to enter the ATM kiosk to shield herself from the rain.
“As she approached the kiosk, she found the shutter partially open. It could be that she tried to enter the ATM booth or hurry towards her home in the same colony. After her head hit the shutter, it came crashing down. Current leaked from an inverter and charged the iron shutter,” said a senior police officer.
The woman’s son, Laxmikant Pathak, alleged that local residents had repeatedly asked Ganesh, who was responsible for the ATM’s maintenance, to repair the shutter, but to no avail.
Following a complaint by the woman’s son, an FIR was registered against Ganesh at Mujesar police station under Section 106 (death by negligence) of BNS.
“When electricians were called to inquire how she could have died, they said an inverter kept behind the machine had malfunctioned. This caused back-up current to find its way through the metal shutter, which led to the woman’s electrocution,” said Yashpal Sharma, a spokesperson for Faridabad police.
“We have initiated an investigation. We are gathering more details,” he added.
